From the Tea Village, gave me a chance to peek into the life of a young girl and her family living in rural China. Although the story takes place in the recent past the living conditions and family life described in this book are something few people raised in the U.S. can imagine. She describes living and working with her family and the needs of the family business as the generations work together to survive.Since Mandarin Chinese is not the native language in her region and the children had to go away to another village for school after the first few years, most of the children receive only a few years of schooling. This is the story of someone who wanted and got more, much more education that most of those from her region. This exacted a high price on her and her family.
This book left me wanting more, more about Sun's life and more from this author.

I quickly came to love the main character and her family, along with several of her classmates at school. The only drawback involved the names of the people. All were two or three syllable words, and the reader may have problems sorting them out. .

This story of Ye Sun's determination to get an education in the face of much difficulty is lovingly written and full of descriptive detail. Having never been to Bulang Mountain, I could easily imagine her family's noodle shop and the brook running on a cool night. Many of us from the West are becoming more familiar with images from urban, developing China, but this story spotlights a unique multi-ethnic region where children have a vastly different experience growing up. I hope there will be a sequel to tell us what happens next!
This beautifully written book draws the reader into the life of Ye Sun and the culture of the Bulang people group. Based on the true story of an amazing young woman from the Yunnan Province of China, the reader immediately connects with her dreams of education, outward struggles and inner conflicts. This story spans the generations of readers. My granddaughter and I both read it and thoroughly enjoyed it while learning about a totally different culture and language. I would highly recommend this book and I look forward to many more from this talented author.
As one who spent many years in southern China, this same story could have taken place in the villages outside my city. This story is rich in detail as it captures the lifestyle of a typical rural Chinese family and the challenges when traditional and modern culture collide. A beautiful read.
I enjoyed reading From the Tea Village since I also lived in Yunnan, China, for a few years. The struggles of the little Bulang girl, Ye Sun, rang true. Poor children from the countryside are often at an educational disadvantage; when any financial disaster strikes the family it can wipe out further opportunity for schooling, even when the child is extremely bright. Henderson also shows how many of the teachers in these areas, although harsh on the outside, look for ways to find help. This book is a good read; I recommend it especially to anyone who wants to learn more about the struggle for educational opportunity in the poorer areas of China.
Eloquently written by a woman who clearly has experience with the region and its people, this gripping tale of a young girl's life in rural China has so many life lessons and teachable moments for all of us. This work calls me to reflect on the contrast between my world and Ye Sun's; questions flooded my mind as I read this riveting book Would I have been so successful under these same circumstances? Why was I blessed with "easy" living, "easy" education", and financial wealth in comparison to these families? What is next for Ye Sun and her family? I look forward to more work from Rebecca D. Henderson.
I recommended "From the Tea Village" to my university for the university-wide summer reading program. Fingers-crossed they choose it!
Rebecca Henderson weaves a non-hurried tale of a time of dirt trail paths, simple meals, loyalties and educational choices. From the Tea Village paints a picture of rural China using local words adding to the color with great description making the reader feel she is there among the tea plants, in the classroom, or at a short woven table enjoying a tasty bowl of noodles. I highly reccomend this novel to those young or older that would like an authentic taste of China. I look forward to reading and trying the recipes from her cookbook Simply Yunnan as her novel made me want to eat food again from that region of the world. Well done, Rebecca!
