There’s a body in the woods. At least, there was. Eleanor Blackwood saw it on her morning run a young woman, strangled to death.
But the police can find nothing—no body, no sign of a crime—and even Ellie has to wonder if it was a trick of her mind, a gruesome vision conjured up by grief. It’s eighteen years to the day since she witnessed her own mother’s murder on the same woodland spot. But what if she really did see what she thinks she saw? What if the body was left there for Ellie alone to find?
And there’s one detail Ellie can’t shake a deliberate number three on the dead woman’s forehead. When she discovers a second body, this one bearing the number two, Ellie is convinced they are not messages but threats. The killer is on a countdown but who is girl number one?
Revised edition This edition of Girl Number One includes editorial revisions.
Girl Number One A gripping pageturner with a twist edition by Jane Holland Literature Fiction eBooks
When she was 6 years old, Ellie witnessed her mother’s murder. She blocked out the memory of who committed the crime. 18 years later, Ellie goes for a run and finds a body where her mother was killed. The killer starts tormenting Ellie, leaving another body for her to find on her mother’s grave, and sending her a message to let her know that she has been chosen to be his “number one girl.” Ellie needs to try and remember who murdered her mother in order to save herself from the same fate.Girl Number One starts off strong. I liked Ellie and found the mystery to be intriguing. However, it unravels at a certain point and Ellie started to irk me. She starts having doubts about everyone around her being involved in her mother’s murder, which is understandable but she sleeps with someone minutes after thinking that he is involved in the murders! I feel like this one has potential, but it just gets too out of control in the end. Overall, it was an entertaining and easy read, but there were some elements missing to make it a must read!

Girl Number One A gripping pageturner with a twist edition by Jane Holland Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Now this is how a book should be written interesting story, characters worth getting to know, moderate sex/violence/profanity/obscenity, easy to read, and compelling to the end. In other words, I liked it. A lot.
Eleanor (Ellie) has struggled since age six when she and her mother were walking in the woods -- where the unthinkable happened her mother was murdered while they were there.
Ellie has spent all the years since then undergoing psycho therapy of various kinds not only to help her cope with what she saw but also to help find her mother's murderer, as well as put a face on "the shadow man" who haunts her dreams and even watches her house and follows her around.
Or is she just plain old crazy?
Ellie steels herself for a run in the woods on the anniversary of her mother's death, something she feels compelled to do in honor of her mother as well as for her own sanity. So Ellie sets off on her early morning run only to find a detour sign on the path that redirects her to the very spot where her mother died.
Soon she is stopped cold in her tracks when she finds the naked body a young woman lying in the same spot as her mother.
This woman's body appears to have been "arranged" in a very similar fashion to that of her mother. But there's the number "two" marked on her forehead.
Ellie tears out of the woods as fast as she can to call police since cellphone reception is poor there. When the police do arrive, their search is fruitless there is no body to be found anywhere and nothing to suggest a body was ever there. There are no tracks, no signs of struggle, nothing anywhere in the whole area.
Of course they think Ellie is delusional, or perhaps crazy, yes . . . but is a she?
The story keeps you guessing throughout and interest never wanes. I did figure out part of it (finally!) but there's plenty of meat on this bone with twists, turns, and surprises galore. I never lost interest; in fact the more I read the more eager I was to turn the pages.
So, yes, I highly recommend "Girl Number One" for sheer entertainment value, and I'll definitely read more books by Jane Holland.
Well done.
This was just okay. None of the characters jumped off the page, they were all pretty flat. Eleanor, Hanna, Tris, and Connor were supposed to be close friends, but they sure didn't come across that way to me. When Ellie came back to her place at the beginning of the book and said she had found a dead body in the woods where her mother was killed. They were all just like "why were you running in the woods today of all days" It was the anniversary of her mother's death. And then when the police came around and said they didn't find a body, they all thought she was imaging it. And the police, geesh what an incompetent force they seemed to be. If one of my friends came back to our place and said she found a dead body in the woods, I would have been all over her making sure she was okay.
I liked the idea of the book, Eleanor witnessed her mother being murdered when she was 6 years old but does not know who it was. Fast forward 18 years and Eleanor finds 2 bodies in the woods with numbers on their heads. What do the numbers mean and who killed these woman? Is her mother's killer back?
I liked the mystery of it, and kind of had an idea who it may be, but really didn't trust anyone. Other than that though, this book really didn't do much for me. None of the characters very very likable or jumped off the pages. The pacing was a bit slow at times, and some of the descriptions were just so long. I like a book that has good descriptions, but sometimes it can be overkill. And some of the choices the main character Eleanor was making, just had me shaking my head.
I received Girl Number One by Jane Holland in a Goodreads giveaway. Review is unbiased.
This is the first book I have read by Jane Holland. I am pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. The plot was interesting with the main character, Ellie, finding a dead body where her Mom was murdered years ago. When the police get there, the body is now gone. Where did it go? Is someone trying to make her crazy? Did she imagine it? Based on her troubled past and also that is was the anniversary of her Mom's death, everyone seems to think that she is mistaken. Now she is on a journey to prove everyone wrong and also find her Mom's killer. I figured out the plot quite early in the book, but I still found the journey entertaining. The descriptions of the locale and the surfing community were a bit too descriptive for me and did not add too much to the story. Don't let this keep you away though as I usually do not tend to like descriptive parts. I will be looking to read other books by this author. 4 stars
